It sounds so simple. Is it really this simple to be stress-free?

What is stress?
Stress is a mechanism, which is really a gift to your human systems because it puts you on alert that something unusual is happening. When under stress, hormones like adrenalin and cortisol are released, your heart rate speeds up, digestion slows down, blood flow to major muscle groups stops, and various other autonomic nervous functions change. Your body’s natural response gives you a burst of energy and strength so you have the capacity to handle any situation.

What does stress do to me?
There are basically 2 kinds of stress. One is positive; the other is negative.

First, acute stress prepares you to take on an emergency that has come upon you. Acute stress is temporary and acts as a motivator to bring you to your next performance height so you can take care of the situation. It is therefore positive.

The second kind of stress is chronic, which comes when you confront an emergency or situation that you cannot do anything about. Chronic stress makes you hopeless and leaves you feeling like you are a victim. It actually plays havoc on your human system, interferes with your immune system, and thus, can induce and create optimal conditions for all kinds of problems including heart attacks, high blood pressure, strokes, cancers, and other nasty diseases.

What do I do about continual stresses at work and in everyday living?
If you work for a boss who is difficult to deal with, the moment you think of work, you feel stress. That stress diminishes you and is negative since you need your job and obviously can’t fire your boss. This places you in a situation where you have to live with the stress. But, there is relief, and it is found in three simple secrets.

The first secret is that you understand that there are certain things you cannot do if your whole agenda is to change others. For example, if your mind sends you signals that your stress is your boss, it becomes chronic since you cannot change your boss. But, if you realize that the stress that makes you want to change your boss is really how you see and deal with him or her, everything changes.

The second secret is to make corrections in your viewpoint and understanding. For example, if your focus is on you, it becomes a personal thing. You begin to think, “my boss insults me” or “my boss is unreasonable to me.” But, if you understand that this boss is just trying to do his or her job to add value to the organization, you begin to see only the good in him or her. And you realize that the problem may just be that he or she uses the wrong words or is not a good communicator.

After you change your mental perception, the third secret is to put yourself on a mission to add value unconditionally. You do this by asking yourself, “what is my role in this organization?” and “where can I add the highest value?” You will then find that suddenly, your only thought becomes your purpose to add value. And thus, your stress is relieved.

By not trying to change others, having the correct viewpoint and understanding, and being on a clear mission to add value, you replace the negative stress with an objective positive focus, which gives you total satisfaction because your ultimate gratification comes only from focusing on adding value by loving, serving, and giving.

With these three secrets, the next time you are in a situation that usually causes you stress, your only thought will be, “how can I add value?”

Is there more that’s causing me problems than just stress, or does it always relate back to that?
Stress starts many reactions that are designed to be temporary in your system. During chronic stress, your body activates these responses continuously, damaging your body. When you visit the doctor, you receive treatment for the resulting conditions like higher blood pressure, your arteries being clogged, or countless other problems. Stress is never treated, even though it may by the real cause of the conditions. By relieving stress, you eliminate the underlying problem so that negativities within your body are minimized. In doing this, you greatly increase your odds to live a long, productive, healthy, and happy life.

Can I really utilize stress for good?
Once you understand that stress is a tool, you can utilize it in your favor to perform at an elevated standard. Athletes and performers do this all the time. For example, many performers who have been honored with great awards, recognize that the pre-show temporary butterflies in their stomach are what brought out the stellar performance.

What does stress do to my mind?
Stress causes you to dig deep inside, forcing you to focus and concentrate. Without stress, you become distracted with all kinds of non-important or unnecessary things. For example, if a performer does not have focus, he or she might be worried about how the attendance is, what this person or that person is going to say, if the technical equipment and sound system are going to work properly, or countless other things that don’t really matter or that he or she cannot do anything about anyways. Stress-caused focus, or absence of distractions, provides the necessary conditions for you to be your maximum self.

Since stress utilized positively can help me focus, can it be a compass for my life?
Stress is a just tool. It can be utilized positively to help you or negatively to hinder you.

Stress as a tool is no different from a knife. A knife in the hands of a murderer could be used to kill someone, but the same knife in the hands of a surgeon could save a life! Just like that knife, stress is not good or bad. It is just a tool. You must have pure intentions to add value to the bigger one and choose your disciplines so you can maximize stress and all tools that are available to you.

Are there any anti-stress techniques that you recommend?
Before trying techniques, you first need to understand and realize that we are all born stress-free. Stress only comes because of unusual conditions experienced by this human body.  For example, if you see something coming at you, you get stressed and your hands automatically go up to protect. That’s an automatic mechanism instilled to save you.

It’s only when you become incapable of protecting yourself from your own thinking that any situation becomes a chronic stress. So, the real secret is to make corrections in your viewpoint and your understanding. You must choose to see only the good in every person and situation, and utilize that good to assist on a clear mission and purpose to add value.

After going back to you and realizing that your system is basically stress-free, do simple breathing exercises. When under stressed, you unknowingly stop breathing properly, minimizing your intake of oxygen. By simply deep breathing, you bring the oxygen back, helping to clear your mind to see things objectively again.

What can I do for my mind?
As complex as your mind is, it has a clear simple purpose to focus on whatever is brought in front of it.  You must bring your mission to unconditionally add value to the front of your mind at all times. Also, to prevent clouding of your focus, you need to operate in the present and move past what may have happened or what might happen. A pure focus and operating in the now will keep your mind in the right place, minimizing stress.

It sounds so simple. Is it really this simple to be stress-free?
It sounds simple because it is natural. Nature trained us to see what we don’t like, the negative side, only as a safety mechanism, so the body is aware of danger. The craziness prevalent in today’s advanced world has created many dangers, and therefore your stress mechanism has been activated continuously, bringing you out of your true alignment. It is not easy, but you can correct this. You just need to work hard to develop a disciplined habit to focus on your mission to add value, and stress will be eliminated.
